gategroup realigns global businesses

gategroup announced important changes to realign its extensive global services and product lines into two major businesses: Airline Solutions and Product and Supply Chain Solutions.  To support these new lines of business, gategroup is realigning its leadership team and its Executive Management Board (EMB). The changes are effective March 1, 2012.

gategroup brands Gate Gourmet, Gate Aviation Services, Gate Safe, eGate Solutions and Performa, will become part of gategroup’s new global Airline Solutions business. The business also will include the Gate Retail Onboard platform, formed in 2011 to consolidate gategroup’s extensive experience in onboard retail services to customers in both the traditional and low-fare carrier segments.

Shangri-La's Hambantota Resort & Spa, Sri Lanka to open in 2014

Hong Kong-based Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts broke ground for a resort on 145 acres on the southern coast of Sri Lanka on 25 February 2012. Shangri-La's Hambantota Resort and Spa, Sri Lanka will complement Shangri-La Hotel, Colombo, which is currently under construction in the capital. The resort is due to open in 2014 and the two properties mark the entry of the hotel group into Sri Lanka, often referred to as “The Pearl of the Indian Ocean.’ The southern coast of Sri Lanka is renowned for its natural beauty and is rich in cultural heritage.

gategroup demonstrated its resilience once again in the face of continued global economic uncertainty and uneven performance within the airline industry, its major customer base.

Carriers in gategroup’s core markets in Europe and North America trimmed capacity in an effort to firm up pricing and to contain climbing costs amid slackening demand. Other external factors that impacted gategroup in 2011 included the strength of the Swiss Franc, our reporting currency, against the Euro and US Dollar, and the earthquake and ensuing events in Japan.



IATA : Passenger Traffic Continues to Rise - Cargo Remains in Doldrums

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced global traffic results for January showing a 5.7% rise in passenger demand but an 8.0% decline in air freight compared to the same month in 2011. The occurrence of Chinese New Year in January (rather than in February as in 2011) exaggerated the increase in passenger demand and the fall in air freight. Stripping this out, the underlying trend was for stronger passenger growth, while stabilized weakness in cargo markets continues.

New seating and galley equipment flies into Aircraft Interiors Expo 2012

The latest economy seating from Acro Aircraft Seating (left) and Pitch Aircraft Seating Systems will be on display in Hamburg. A host of innovative approaches to seating and airline galleys will be on display next month when Aircraft Interiors Expo returns to the Hamburg Messe from 27-29 March.

Following interest in its pre-production concept at the 2011 exhibition, Pitch Aircraft Seating Systems has rapidly advanced its design for a new light weight seat, due to be showcased at this year’s show. Developed in conjunction with Intier Automotive for single aisle short-haul flights, the innovative seating solution weighs less than 25kg and features a backrest moulded from lightweight composite materials. A number of airlines have already expressed significant interest in Pitch’s sophisticated design and, having successfully passed the landmark 16g dynamic test, the company is on track to deliver the seats at the end of the year.

Malaysia Airlines Suffers Heavy Losses In 2011

Malaysia Airlines reported an unaudited net loss of RM1.28 billion for the fourth quarter ended 31 December 2011, bringing the Group’s full year results to a net loss of RM2.52 billion for the financial year ended 31 December 2011 on the back of a marginal increase in Group revenue (up 2% to RM13.90 billion) and carrying 1.3 million more passengers (totalling 17 million) compared to the previous year.

“The bottom-line Group losses for 2011 underscore the imperative need for Malaysia Airlines to immediately adopt strong measures to stop the bleeding. These include staff redeployment, increasing productivity and efficiency, relentless cost control and making further route reviews. We are also implementing an aggressive sales & marketing strategy”, said Ahmad Jauhari Yahya, Malaysia Airlines Group Chief Executive Officer.

Etihad Airways will launch flights to Basra in southern Iraq from mid-April.

Basra becomes the 84th destination in the carrier’s global network and the third city it flies to in Iraq. Etihad Airways already operates services to the capital, Baghdad, and Erbil, in the country’s north.

Chicago's Taste Restaurant Application Deadline Extended

In an effort to accommodate industry requests and attract a wide variety of new and different restaurants, the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) is extending the restaurant application deadline for the Taste of Chicago. While response has been strong for both the five-day and the “Pop Up” (one-day) restaurants, DCASE is offering a grace period based on input from previous Taste vendors who want to apply, but had yet to complete an application.  Vendors cited an earlier application period that included two business days that were city holidays as a factor for the extension.

Royal Jordanian registers record number in passengers during January 2012

Airline NewsRoyal Jordanian has registered a record number of passengers – 268,000 – in January 2012. It counted 213,000 passengers in the same period of 2011, marking a 25% increase, and a 2% increase over the estimated budget.

The number is the highest achieved by the airline for the month of January since its establishment, proof of the great and continuous efforts exerted to attract passengers, and increase the company’s market share in Jordan and on the rest of its route network that covers 60 Arab and international destinations.

Air Arabia fourth quarter net profit rises seven per cent to AED 78.7 million

Airline NewsAir Arabia reported a net profit of AED 78.7 million for the three months ending December 31, 2011, an increase of seven per cent compared to AED 73.6 million in the fourth quarter of 2010. 

The company’s turnover for the fourth quarter 2011 reached AED 638 million, an increase of 17 per cent compared to AED 544.8 million in 2010. Air Arabia carried 1,180,402 passengers in the final three months of last year, up two per cent compared to the same period in 2010.

Rail freight operator appointed to transport excavated material from London to Northfleet

C300 western running tunnels contractor BFK (BAM/Ferrovial/Kier JV) has appointed GB Railfreight to transport excavated material from Royal Oak to Northfleet.

Crossrail tunnelling will commence at Royal Oak next month. Excavated material generated from the tunnelling operations for the western tunnels (Royal Oak to Farringdon) will exit at the Royal Oak Portal and be transported by freight train to Northfleet, Kent.
Freight trains will travel from Westbourne Park to Northfleet via the Great Western Main Line, the Greenford Loop, West London Line and Lewisham. Up to five freight trains will operate from Westbourne Park on Mondays to Saturdays with up to four trains on Sundays.

Gulf Air strengthens operations in Saudi Arabia with more flights

Airline NewsGulf Air has added 11 extra flights to its existing flights to Saudi Arabia’s Jeddah and Riyadh to meet the increasing passenger demand.

The airline will operate four extra flights to Jeddah, increasing its frequency from 10 to 14 per week each direction starting from 01 March 2012, while adding seven flights to Riyadh increasing the frequency from its present 14 flights per week to 21 flights each direction, also starting from 01 March 2012. Together, these additional flights will offer 3000 seats and 22,000 kilos of cargo capacity per week.

Emirates boosts Middle East frequencies

Airline newsEmirates’ Middle East operations will receive a boost this August as the airline increases its daily capacity to both Kuwait and Doha, adding a total capacity increase of almost 29 percent across the two routes.

In line with Emirates’ rapid global expansion Qatar and Kuwait will each benefit from an additional daily frequency, bringing operations to Doha to six services per day and Kuwait up to five flights per day. With six flights per day, Doha has the highest number of daily frequencies in the Middle East region, followed by Kuwait.

Estonian Air Transitions to All-Embraer E-Jets Fleet

Estonian Air has selected Embraer’s family of E-Jets to revamp its entire fleet of narrow-body and regional jets. The national flag carrier of Estonia and Embraer have signed a contract for the purchase of three E175s and one E190. Estonian Air will also take eight additional aircraft, four E170s and four E190s, under a combination of lease agreements with third parties and leasing companies. The direct purchase from Embraer is subject to the approval of Estonian Air’s Supervisory Council.

The first of four E170s leased from Finnair is entering service this month, while the aircraft on firm order will be delivered in the second semester of 2014.

Oxford University celebrates Alice Day

The university city of Oxford is holding a special Alice Day and Caucus Race this summer to mark the 150th anniversary of the first telling of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Oxford is where the author Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, better known as Lewis Carroll, first outlined his story to the 10-year-old Alice Liddell and her sisters on 4 July 1862. It was published as Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland in 1865, followed in 1871 by the sequel Through the Looking-Glass and what Alice Found There. The books have been translated into 125 languages.

The organisers promise that on Alice Day, 7 July, there will be curiouser and curiouser happenings including a Mad Hatter’s tea party, the Queen of Hearts’ Unbirthday Party, exhibitions, storytelling, promenade theatre and Alice-themed walks and talks. The following day, the Caucus Race will take place in Merton Field, Christ Church, which is the college where Lewis Carroll was a maths tutor and where the original Alice also lived.

Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau wins 49 bids

A total of 49 international and regional conventions have been secured for Malaysia by the Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB) with industry partners in 2011. Malaysia’s stellar performance and the strong display of commitment by Ministry of Tourism, various government agencies, Sarawak Convention Bureau, Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre and other strategic partners in securing business events for the country further reinforce Malaysia’s positioning as Asia’s Business Events Hub.

“With an average of 730 delegates per event, these conventions are expected to attract over 35,750 delegates to Malaysia between 2012-2019 and generate in excess of RM382 million (EUR91 million, USD123 million, AUD123 million) in economic impact for the country,” said Mr Zulkefli Hj Sharif, Chief Executive Officer, MyCEB. One of the most significant successes includes the world’s largest meeting of Chinese finance and insurance professionals, the International Dragon Award Annual Conference 2013 (5,000 delegates), Women Deliver Conference 2013 (4,500 delegates).
