Boeing and TUI Travel PLC Announce Commitment for 60 737 MAX Airplanes

 Boeing and TUI Travel PLC announced a commitment today for 60 737 MAX airplanes, valued at $6.09 billion at list prices. The commitment by one of the world’s leading leisure travel groups includes 737 MAX 8s and 9s. Boeing looks forward to working with TUI Travel to finalize the details, at which time the order will be posted as a firm order to the Boeing Orders and Deliveries website.

“A major part of TUI Travel’s strategy is to provide our customers with unique holiday experiences that they can only get from us,” said Peter Long, Chief Executive, TUI Travel. "This multi-billion pound investment in the Boeing 737 MAX – representing the future generation of more fuel-efficient aircraft for our short and medium-haul programmes - will be a further driver in delivering this.”

High-flying judges check-in for global Airbus student challenge

 The leading aircraft manufacturer Airbus has today unveiled a high calibre international panel to judge the final of the 2013 Fly Your Ideas student challenge. The six member jury is lead by Charles Champion, Airbus Executive Vice President Engineering. The jury will be looking for the most innovative idea for a more sustainable aviation industry from among five finalist student teams.

Station footbridge restoration to be entered for national railway heritage award

 A station footbridge restoration project in Wiltshire is to be entered into this year's National Railway Heritage Trust awards when it is completed.

Network Rail has repainted the platform canopies at the Grade 2 listed station at Bradford-on-Avon and is restoring the station footbridge to its former glory.

The footbridge was lifted out a few weeks ago and sent to a foundry in Plymouth for grit blasting and repair. When it is re-installed, the span and staircases will be painted in the original Great Western Railway colours of dark and light stone to reflect the station’s heritage status.

Doctor Who stops in Sydney for 50th Anniversary this Saturday

 The projection will showcase an amazing visual feast of colour, light and movement as Doctor Who travels through space and time, pursued by some of his greatest enemies.

The Doctor Who projections will be displayed at six intervals throughout the evening of Saturday June 1, featuring music from the TV show including I am the Doctor. The first Doctor Who projection will be shown at 6.50pm, then 10 minutes to every hour, until midnight.

The Doctor Who projections will be interspersed with Vivid Sydney festival hit Move Your Building, an interactive projection produced by French design company Danny Rose.

For those who aren’t able to make it to Customs House, a special pre-recorded webcast of the Doctor Who projection will be available to watch from 6.50pm Saturday 1 June at youtube.com/vividsydney and will be available until the end of the Vivid Sydney festival on 10 June.

"Maximum Destruction" is coming to ANZ Stadium, but we're not talking about next week's State of Origin game

 Deputy Premier Andrew Stoner today launched the exclusive Australian appearance of one of the world’s fastest growing motorsports, Monster Jam, featuring monster trucks with names like Maximum Destruction, Grave Digger and Iron Man.

The live event will take place at Western Sydney’s ANZ Stadium for one night only, on 19 October this year.

“Monster Jam is an internationally celebrated live family event, watched by millions of people in arenas around the world and I am pleased to welcome it to NSW,” Mr Stoner said.

“With three metre tall and four metre wide vehicles weighing five tonnes racing in a custom-designed track full of obstacles and skill challenges, Monster Jam will be a night of action-packed entertainment.

Aer Arann gets its first ATR 72-600

 Aer Arann has successfully taken delivery of its first ATR 72-600 turboprop aircraft. The aircraft is the first of eight ATR 72-600s ordered by the airline in a contract valued at some US$ 187 million. Seven other planes are scheduled to be delivered in 2013 and 2014. These eight brand new airplanes will replace the older existing fleet of ATR 72-200s and ATR 42-300s. With 3 ATR 72-500s currently in service the new planes will bring to 11 the total fleet of ATRs operated by Aer Arann. The first plane starts service this month, with the remaining aircraft expected for delivery over the next 11 months. The aircraft will fly in the livery of Aer Lingus Regional, based on a franchise relationship between Aer Arann and Aer Lingus.

Combined with the existing routes operated from airline’s bases in Dublin, Cork, Shannon and Knock, the airline will open up 2 new routes departing from Dublin to Manchester and Birmingham which should bring the airline’s route network to 24. Together with existing Aer Lingus mainline services to Manchester and Birmingham, these new services will result in a significant ramping up of frequencies on two of the busiest routes on the Ireland to UK network. Also, Aer Arann plans to increase frequencies on its Dublin Edinburgh and Dublin Glasgow routes.

Lufthansa Technik AERO Alzey expands within the Chinese Market

 The Chinese operator Okay Airways (OKA) and Lufthansa Technik AERO Alzey (LTAA) have signed an exclusive two-years-contract about MRO services for PW127J engines. Actual OKA is operating eight MA-60 aircraft and has started ambitious expansion. LTAA has been selected as partner to accompany this development, even more than two years on an extended contract base.

"Referring to our excellent experience with LTAA in 2012, we are happy to extend this technical cooperation with LTAA. Okay Airways has the chance to learn from LTAA and the Lufthansa Group. And we know as well that our PW127J engines are in best hands," says OKA CEO Mr. Liu on the occasion of the Signing Ceremony in Alzey.

Le Palais Hotel Prague: Danilo Iovieno new General Manager

 Danilo Iovieno took over as General Manager of the Le Palais Prague, a member of The Leading Hotels of the World, at the end of February 2013.

The native of Italy has already proven his skill at several hotels in the luxury hospitality business. His meteoric career began as General Manager Assistant at the Castello Hotel on Sardinia and soon led him to the Boscolo Hotels – first as Room Division Manager and then as Director of Operations at the Boscolo Hotels in Budapest and Prague. The 43-year-old then successfully held the General Manager position at the Boscolo Hotels in Prague and Rome before becoming General Manager of the Raito Hotel on the Amalfi Coast in Italy. The multilingual hotelier, who already is very familiar with Prague thanks to his earlier engagements at the Boscolo Hotels, has successfully managed the luxury hotel Le Palais for two months already: “The Le Palais Prague is renowned beyond the Czech capital for its high level of service and comfort. We also want to position the Le Palais as the perfect romantic hideaway for weddings, honeymoons or as a refuge for romantic weekends,” he says.

Bolshoi Ballet Comes On Brisbane


Tonight’s opening of the Bolshoi Ballet will draw visitors from across Australia for this world-class performance, stimulating business in Brisbane and beyond, according to peak national industry body Tourism & Transport Forum (TTF).

Moscow’s Bolshoi Ballet will perform an exclusive season in Brisbane until 9 June as part of the annual QPAC International Series.

TTF Chief Executive Ken Morrison said the exclusive performances will draw crowds from across Australia.

“Last year’s Hamburg Season attracted audiences in excess of 16,000, including 17 per cent from interstate,” Mr Morrison said “and we look forward to even better numbers this year.”

 Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide has declared that the Grand Hills Hotel & Spa in Broumana – a polish and serene mountain resort town near Beirut, Lebanon – will join its iconic Luxury Collection portfolio.

Owned by Mouawad Village Broumana Sal., Grand Hills, a Luxury Collection Resort will mark the brand’s entry into Lebanon when it opens in early 2015 following a complete renovation. Morgans Hotel Group Board Votes To Eliminate Poison Pill

 Morgans Hotel Group Co.  ("MHG" or the "Company") today announced that its Board of Directors has voted to terminate the Company's stockholder rights plan, commonly known as a "poison pill," on or before October 3, 2013.  Additionally, the Company has established a new policy that requires stockholder approval of any future stockholder rights plan either prior to, or within twelve months of adoption of, such plan.

JetBlue To Launch Composting Program At JFK's Terminal 5

 JetBlue Airways, New York's Hometown Airline™, today announced a partnership with Air Ventures and Royal Waste Services to compost leftovers from select restaurants in Terminal 5 (T5) at John F. Kennedy International Airport. Air Ventures, the franchisee that owns and operates the Jamba Juice and Dunkin Donuts restaurants in T5 and Royal Waste Services have committed to work with the airline to separate and haul nearly 300 pounds of food waste each day for composting.

Qantas Casts Nasa's Mars Rover In New Frequent Flyer Campaign

 Qantas has been given permission by NASA to use its Mars Rover ‘Curiosity’ in a new campaign for its Frequent Flyer program.

A replica of the car-sized rover will feature in television, outdoor, social media and digital advertising from next month in a campaign designed to encourage over 9 million Frequent Flyer members to discover the full potential of the program.

CEO of Qantas Loyalty, Lesley Grant, said Curiosity was chosen because she symbolises the spirit of exploration – including a clear link to travel.

“The Frequent Flyer program is vast, particularly in terms of all the different ways to earn and use points,” said Ms Grant.

Mergers: Commission approves acquisition of Belgian potato processor Lutosa by rival McCain, subject to conditions

 The European Commission has cleared under the EU Merger Regulation the proposed acquisition of Lutosa of Belgium by McCain of Canada. Lutosa's activities overlap with those of the global market leader McCain in the production and sale of processed potato products, in particular frozen French fries. The clearance is conditional on the divestment of the Lutosa brand of potato products in the European Economic Area (EEA). The Commission had concerns that the merger, as initially notified, would have reduced competition on the Belgian retail market for French fries and potato specialities. The commitments offered by the parties adequately address these concerns.

Strategic Hotels & Resorts, Inc. Announces Termiation of Stockholder Rights Plan

 Strategic Hotels & Resorts today announced that its Board of Directors approved an amendment to the Company's stockholder rights plan to accelerate the expiration date from November 30, 2013 to as soon as possible, but no later than the close of business on June 14, 2013. In addition, the Board of Directors amended the Company's Corporate Guidance Guidelines to provide that if the Company were to adopt any new stockholder rights plan in the future, it will submit the stockholder rights plan for shareholder approval within 12 months of its adoption.

CrossRail Supply Chain Event Brings Together Suppliers With Principal Contractors

 Delegates at Crossrail’s second annual ‘Meet the Contractor’ event heard from a number of speakers, including Crossrail Chief Executive, Andrew Wolstenholme, about the project, the types of contracts that will arise over the years ahead and what they need to do to maximise their chances of winning work on Crossrail.

Throughout the day over 200 targeted ‘one to one’ appointments between Crossrail’s principal contractors and suppliers of all sizes, took place. The appointments were pre-scheduled to match contractors with relevant suppliers offering the products and services that will be in demand over the coming year. During the appointments, suppliers had the opportunity to explain to the contractors what they do and to explore the possibility of working together on the Crossrail project.

Bombardier Targeting Longer Maintenance Check Intervals for CSeries Aircraft Prior to Entry-into-Service

 Bombardier Aerospace announced today at its European Regional Review in Munich, Germany that prior to the airliner’s entry-into-service, it is targeting CSeries aircraft line maintenance checks (“A Checks) at intervals of 850 flight hours and base maintenance checks (“C” Checks) at intervals of 8,500 flight hours.

Bombardier has been developing a Maintenance Steering Group 3 (MSG-3)-based maintenance program since October 2010 for the CSeries aircraft. Throughout the design evolution phase, the company has determined that line maintenance and base maintenance task intervals at, or in excess of, 850 and 8,500 flight hours respectively, can be achieved. The proposed maintenance plan will allow operators of CSeries aircraft to benefit from minimized downtime and more competitive maintenance costs, all while ensuring the inherent safety and reliability of the aircraft.

 A celebration is in the air at the Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC). The Centre took home the much-coveted award for the Best Events Venue at the Middle East Event Awards 2013 – a major achievement for a venue that is only in its second year in operation. The annual ceremony which took place in Dubai last week recognised the region’s top event and exhibition companies. Winners were selected based on votes from a panel of events’ industry experts.

The Centre, which is a member of Qatar Foundation, has attracted a number of high profile events in the 18 months since opening.

Agnes Gerry crowned Miss Seychelles- another World 2013

 In the idyllic setting of Eden Plaza on Eden Island, with a stunning backdrop of ocean and luxury yachts, 19-year old Agnes Gerry was crowned Miss Seychelles …Another World 2013, on Saturday, May 25th to the tune of Cliff Richard’s hit “Congratulation” as boats blared their sirens.  Raised in a modest background she is considered as a simple island girl.

Agnes, who is a student of the Seychelles Tourism Academy(STA), with her sights initially on a career as a tour guide, was rather emotional when her name was called out by host Dereck Savy and  outgoing Miss Seychelles Sherlyn Furneau who parted with the crown won last.

Seychelles Minister addresses Press Conference in Mauritius in his capacity a Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands President

 Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, in his capacity as the President of the Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands regional Organization, addressed a Press Conference yesterday afternoon at the Maradiva Villas Resort & Spa at Wolmar in Mauritius. Minister St.Ange was joined at the Press Conference by Derek Savy, the new Marketing Director for the Vanilla Islands who are both in transit on their way to Madagascar to attend the 2nd Edition of the International Tourism Trade Fair in Madagascar.

The Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands regional Organization today comprises of Seychelles, La Reunion, Mauritius, Madagascar, Comoros and Mayotte, with an agreement already reached to include Maldives in the very near future.

 More than 1,000 people are expected to attend the 103rd Annual Luncheon of the San Francisco Travel Association on Tuesday, June 18, at Moscone West, 800 Howard St., San Francisco.

The annual event is the largest gathering of San Francisco’s tourism industry, a major economic engine for the City. Mayor Edwin Lee and Board of Supervisors President David Chiu are scheduled to address the group, along with San Francisco Travel President and CEO Joe D’Alessandro.

“Our theme, ‘Now’s the Time,’ reflects that this is a unique time for San Francisco,” D’Alessandro said. “There have never been so many opportunities – as well as some important challenges – for us as a city, a destination and an industry.”

Malaysia Airlines Incorporates Fuel Surcharge into Published Fares

 Effective 1 June 2013, Malaysia Airlines' published fares for travel originating from Singapore will include fuel surcharge.

The airline is introducing all-in fares for Singapore following rollouts in New Zealand, Sri Lanka and India. Such fares will be introduced progressively across its worldwide network.

This new practices complies with guidelines of the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

According to Malaysia Airlines, as fuel cost is part of the operating cost of the airline, it makes sense and provides convenience to customers and trade partners to have fuel surcharge included in the published fare.

Malta Airport wins Euro ANNIE award

 The record increase of new airlines in this summer’s schedule, has led Malta International Airport to receive anna.aero’s Euro ANNIE award.

Malta Airport is one of the European airports with the biggest net gain in the number of scheduled airlines operating between August 2012 and August 2013.

The new airlines are transavia.com, Monarch Airlines, airBaltic, Wizz Air and Turkish Airlines.
